The GoLite Lime Lites ($110) are hard shoes to describe. Light hikers? Approach shoes? Urban knock-arounds? Yes, yes and yes. You could put these shoes on for casual Friday at the office and wear them straight through Sunday, with a day hike, soccer match and dinner party in between.

The look of the Lime Lites definitely leans towards the trail, with a grippy lugged sole, rubber toe bumper and rock climbing shoe-inspired lacing. But brush the mud off and the supple leather and contrast stitching means they wear well with jeans or khakis. The shoes feel good right out of the box, thanks to a swappable “Precise Fit” insole that accommodates low and high volume feet.

I wore the Lime Lites out for Sunday brunch before shouldering a pack for an afternoon hike and they worked well in both environments. The shoes are designed to put a firm platform directly under the foot, with more supple material beneath, an upside-down design that works well on uneven or rocky terrain. GoLite claims the outsole is modeled after a mountain lion’s paw and despite this hyperbolic description, it worked well on wet and dry trails.

There are a lot of hybrid light hiking shoes out there nowadays. But the GoLite Lime Lites might be the best of the bunch.

NEF lands at Newmarket mills

In 2010, the mill buildings will once again be the home to a shoe company: New England Footwear was officially welcomed Friday into what was once, and hopefully will be again, the economic epicenter of the town. The factory outlet held a grand opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and open house.

“We’re thrilled to bring footwear back to Newmarket,” said Doug Clark, chief executive officer of NEF.

“We love the history of the mills and the history of Newmarket with its connection to shoe-making,” said Tom Montgomery, chief operating officer of NEF. “There’s something about being in this type of building that gives us a connection to shoe-making, and it helps us in terms of having that history.”

All competitors will start at the same time in the same location. At a predetermined spot the 10 mile & 4.5 mile races will split with competitors going in different directions. This a very technical trail race.

There is arguably no better urban trail running and mountain biking network in the northeast than the Oaklands & Henderson-Swasey Town Forests. Located just minutes from downtown Exeter, NH these trails are better known as Fort Rock. If it’s technical trail running you’re looking for…search no further.
